Be ready for the worst!
Last Saturday I played a gig with my band The Riven. It was in one of the best rock clubs in London, the place was packed and in the second song of our set, just when my solo was coming, my amp decided to stop working. No sound would come out of it and it literally smelt like something was burning inside it. Hopefully my drummer and bass player saw what was going on and they extended the pre-solo section with an improvised jam while the sound engineer of the venue and a friend came on stage with a replacement head from the other band that was playing on the night. We managed to swap heads quite quickly and my sound was back on to carry on with the song in a couple minutes…the show must go on!
What I learnt from it is that when you are on stage you have to be ready for the worst. Make sure you bring extra cables/strings/picks and leave them around the stage so you can grab them quickly if needed, even consider bringing an extra guitar if it’s a really important show and you have a limited stage time! And (and here’s where I failed) if it’s possible talk with the other bands so their backline can stay on stage therefore in case something happens you can change amps quickly (and obviously offer to do the same for them)!
