PIANO LESSONS IN SPAIN
at WKMT Mondoñedo

The supporting concepts

Since its origins, WKMT has entertained the idea of developing its activities within premises full of personality. For that reason, the premises should always remain the “teacher home”.

The teacher home should be raised as an all inspiring venue which can envelop the students with artistic elements. The same as any other aesthetically correct construction, the” teacher home” should be built around a consistent creative core. Following these lines, each of our venues tries to portray one aesthetic paradigm. Kensington is the Victorian houseCamberwell is the 60’s and Bermondsey “The City“.

The central concept behind “The Rectorate” is the artistic indulgence, the freedom of space and nature. The dream behind it is to become a vessel of art; art in the shape of paintings, sculptures and, most importantly, music.

The WKMT Rectorate

The rectorate is the jewel of the crown of the WKMT piano teaching approach. It is also the fourth grand venue, the continental enclave of WKMT London.

The rectorate is based in Galicia, most notably, in the episcopal city of Mondonedo. Its primary function is to be the administrative centre of WKMT and the official residence of the WKMT director, maestro Juan Jose Rezzuto.

Music and the sense of "beauty."

Juan Rezzuto, as an Italian citizen, is irresistibly attracted to beauty. Beauty in all its shapes, in people, in visuals, in architecture, in the way of living, and music.
Classical music was inspired to complement and sometimes enhance physical beauty. Music is the language of emotions, and as such, it succeeds in making us feel what other arts cannot. For that reason, it became the indispensable companion of all grand events.
In the beginning, the relationship music kept with beauty was always attached to significant events. In the church, in ceremonies and parties, it would be catabolic of great experiences.
This same spirit is what we intend to recreate at "The Rectorate".

The perfect space

To favour the arousal of these intense emotions, we needed to find an area that could contain a critical mass of people comfortable and inspired. “Santa Emilia” meets all these requirements.

“Santa Emilia” is a liberty style 1920’s villa based in the heart of the historical province of Lugo in Galicia. Its impressive art-deco-meets-art-nouveau-façade inspires its guests at first sight.

“Santa Emilia” is situated in historical urban grounds within the boundaries of the Mondonedo “Centro Historico”. Its land is just big enough to host an old renaissance garden filled with ornamental flower plants, trees and the most elegant mature fruit trees. Its walled garden is limited by an antique three-metre-tall granite wall. These boundaries allow students to feel contained within a world of beauty, peace and inspiration.

Its imposing main entrance leads into an art nouveau internal space framed by a crystal gate which is the bridge between nature outside and the sophisticated inside. Filled with bannister staircase, magnificent double doors to each room and the most amazing antique wooden floors, “Santa Emilia” succeeds in transporting its guests back in time, directly to the best of the Galician belle epoque.

“Santa Emilia” makes the perfect WKMT rectorate.

The possibility of introspection

It is vastly documented that generous spaces foster imagination. To create, we need to feel that there is room for our creations to come into existence.
Being at the rectorate means that you will share with Juan Rezzuto his space of inspiration. Sometimes you will want to be alone; sometimes you will need to see the mountains, sometimes you might need to hear the river or sometimes you just need to sit in the garden. We will always bring no more than six adults to The Rectorate. The latter means that each of our students will be confronted with an excess of space to let their imaginations flow.
The main ingredient to reach inspiration is to feel you are not answering to anyone else's demands but yours. You need to be able to hide in comfort, and you also need to be able to socialise with equally oriented people.

The effort put on making this dream real has been enormous but I'm expecting to be a game-changer for the participating students

The Right Stimulation

After the “cultural” proposal of the day, we head back to the house where lunch is awaiting us. Lunch at the Rectorate means lunch in all its glory. By default, it includes traditional Galician ingredients featuring seafood and, arguably, the best beef in Europe.
The afternoon is meant for practising. Students are granted access to pianos both at the house and at the fabulous Mondonedo conservatoire, just some minutes walk from the manor.
After having practised surrounded by nature and in an all inspiring set-up, then the round of one-to-one lessons start up until late evening. After a short break, dinner is ready in the main dining room of “Santa Emilia”.
Food is also considered a source of inspiration; for that reason, our dinners are just historical! Elongated menus conduct and provide with the perfect frame for an artistic conversation to arise. We will build bridges between society, music, architecture and history, and we will get to know more about ourselves while we meet other fantastic individuals.

The rounded circle

After having stimulated our London students for years with beautiful professional concerts, festivals, performance opportunities and masterclasses, we now close this circle of graceful musical indulgence with a chance to be deeply inspired. A privilege that was reserved only to a small minority of our society is now open to WKMT students interested in exploring the reason why music was created in the first place. The rectorate is the gate into the origins of music itself, come and be a part of something musically transcendental!
