Advanced Workshop in Musical Analysis: Practical Applications of Jan La Rue’s Style Analysis
Course Description:
This 8-lesson online workshop is a specialised extension of our previously offered 24-lesson course in musical analysis, focusing on the practical aspects of Jan La Rue’s style analysis. Designed exclusively for students who have completed the initial course, this workshop offers a hands-on approach to musical analysis, allowing participants to delve deeper into the practicalities of La Rue’s methodologies.
Structure and Content:
-
Participant-Centered Approach: Each of the four participants will select a musical piece before the commencement of the course. This selection can be in the form of an audio recording, a music sheet, or a digital file (Sibelius, PDF, MDI or MuseScore format). These pieces will be shared with the entire class before the course begins, setting the stage for a collaborative and interactive learning experience.
-
Two-Lesson Focus per Piece: The workshop is structured to dedicate two lessons to each chosen piece, totalling eight lessons for the course. This approach ensures an in-depth analysis and understanding of each work.
-
Initial Presentation and Peer Engagement: In the first lesson dedicated to each piece, the student who selected it will present their preliminary analysis. This presentation will serve as a starting point for group discussion, allowing for peer feedback and collaborative exploration of the piece.
-
Guided Instruction and Enhancement: Following the initial presentation, the instructor will provide expert guidance, supplementing the student’s analysis with additional insights, contextual information, and necessary corrections. This interactive process ensures that each analysis is thorough, accurate, and reflective of La Rue’s stylistic principles.
-
Comprehensive Analysis and Application: In the second lesson for each piece, the student will present a complete written analysis, adhering to the guidelines of Jan La Rue’s style analysis. This exercise not only reinforces the theoretical knowledge acquired in the previous course but also enhances practical skills in musical analysis.
-
Active Participation and Collaborative Learning: A key feature of this workshop is the emphasis on active participation and involvement from all attendees. Each student’s work becomes a learning tool for the entire group, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
