WKMT SINGING LESSONS WITH ANN MARIE WHITE
I’m so pleased to join WKMT as its newest voice teacher starting this month! I come to London via Chicago, IL where I have been working as a singer, actor, and professor of music. Teaching voice lessons is one of the great joys in my life as its process is unique to every individual. Each student requires a personalized model for accessing and processing information, especially in an area as beautifully vulnerable as working on one’s own voice. As a teacher, then, I find the challenge of balancing learning styles and encouraging an exploration of self expression while maintaining clear, step by step progressions towards technical skill truly engaging. My work stems deeply from the ideas and approaches of W Stephen Smith (author of The Naked Voice) and Kristin Linklater (author of Freeing the Natural Voice.) These ideas, coupled with my own, form a process which is anatomically accurate and pragmatic, while addressing the reality that singing engages the whole person: mind, body, breath, imagination, and emotion.
My teaching applies to all genres as I believe musical style can be additional to any good technique. If you’re hesitant to get started, I extend a warm invitation especially to you: as singing lessons gently guide all students to face the subtle (or not so subtle) fears and anxieties of offering up one’s voice. I am spirited and encouraging and work to make all singing experiences pleasurable. I look forward to meeting you!
