London Piano Masterclass 24.08.2016 - SUMMARY

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

Why Haydn?

At WKMT we work hard to make sure our teachers are always up to date with our news and last activities.

Our core project at the moment revolves around Joseph Haydn. We are determined to explore all the scope of his production. Our students can learn lots from this research as Haydn is one of the most approachable and yet famous composer of the XVIII century.

As he was supported by his faithful patrons through all his life, many of his pieces were written to be played by some of them. As not all of them were highly achieved pianists, these pieces were written so they could be played comfortably by semi-professional musicians. They still preserve the quality writing that defines Haydn production but they are at the reach of the majority of our students.

Memorization Process

Once again we work on our "house memorisation technique". It is important that all our teachers fully understand it so they can apply it homogeneously to our students. Educational consistency is in the core of our teaching approach and therefore demands most of our efforts to keep up with it.

Our memorisation process is structured so our students strengthen the 6 main pianistic memories:

  1. The visual memory of the score

  2. The memory of the name of the notes

  3. The melody itself

  4. The visual memory of how the hands look in the keyboard while we play

  5. The so called “muscle memory”

Dynamic planning

We worked as well on how to understand the dynamics written and not written in the score. This is a subject that will take several of our Masterclasses. We started with analysing Haydn Sonata No. 20 2nd movement. We selected a musical unit and we designed a dynamic plan that took into account:

  1. Accentuation

  2. Attack and release

  3. Hypermetrics
